Grab Your Crew and Join the Climate Strike
September 17, 2019
This Friday (September 20, 2019) kicks off a week of Climate Strike events — are you in? If you're not sure how to get involved, here's your cheat sheet.
1. Find your local strike
First things first, identify when and where your local event is going down — use this Global Climate Strike map. If you're in a major metro area, there are probably a few to choose from.
Don't worry if you have to miss work or school to participate. It will only further emphasize the message you're sending by participating — that's the whole point of striking! Your coworkers or fellow students will take note that the future of our planet is more important than the regularly scheduled programming. May we even suggest setting an email away message to that effect?
2. Plan a great day around it
The best way to recruit your friends is to turn this into an exciting day of fun and bonding! So start the day off with a great breakfast, a yoga session or invigorating trail run, and/or the creativity of making some eye-catching protest signs together. Plan to finish off the day with something to reward yourself, like a self care treat (more on this below) or going out for drinks.
You'll also want to account for practical matters, such as having enough (mineral based!) sunscreen, drinking water (in reusable bottles!) and snacks (in your favorite zero-waste vessel!) to go around. And make sure you take into account transportation to and from the event — use mass transit to avoid parking nightmares and, of course, do mama earth good!
3. Recruit your friends
Now that you've done the heavy lifting, getting your buddies to tag along should be easy. Let them know how important this is to you and how much of a thrill it's going to be to experience this together. You can also mention that decades from now, you'll be able to look back and know you were part of the "in" crowd that was on the right side of history — not a bad motivator! How amazing would it have been to march alongside MLK, Jr., or Susan B. Anthony? Now's your chance to be part of history!
4. Make a badass sign, and strike!
Signs aren't required but they're a really fun opportunity to express yourself and make an amazing souvenir for an unforgettable event — plus, they double as totally unique and inspiring wall art! Here are some great ideas to get your creative juices flowing. Share them liberally!
Once you're at the strike, make sure you get a pic or two of yourself with your buds and your posters to capture the moment for posterity — and that all-important social sharing to spread the message.
5. Time for self care
After the strike you'll be filled with many emotions — they could range from elation to rage, and anything in between. You're well aware of the urgency of the situation and you so badly want to be part of the change. But before you dive in, it's time to process what you're feeling and channel that energy in a constructive way. The goal is to figure out the best way to make a difference, so hit pause for a moment, soak it all in, and give yourself time.
The best thing to do at this point is self care. What makes you feel most like yourself? Maybe it's meditation, exercise, reading a novel, spending time with your pets, indulging in a good meal, or taking a relaxing bath followed by your skincare routine (we had to throw that in there ;). When you're feeling most like yourself, you'll be able to tap into that inner genius that knows what your talents are and how to put them to work for the good of our planet.
After you focus on something else and let those thoughts and feelings swim around in your subconscious for a while, you'll be in a better spot to determine your own personal strategy for making a difference.
