What is Oil Cleansing and Why You Should Try It?

What is Oil Cleansing and Why You Should Try It?

Cleansing is a delicate balance. You want your skin to be clean, but you don’t want to remove your skin’s own moisturizing factors or throw it out of balance.

This step in your routine is the foundation of good skincare and it’s so important to get it right. We're so excited about cleansing with oil that we offer three options. They each work great to remove makeup and impurities, and then they rinse right off — not what you'd expect from an oil, right?

Gentle, natural oil based cleansers

Why use an oil-based cleanser?

Using oil to cleanse the skin seems counterintuitive at first — especially if you have oily skin. But if you’ve ever heard the old adage “like attracts like,” it starts to make sense. Oil actually removes the things we’re always trying to get off our faces at the end of the day — like makeup, waterproof mascara, and yes, excess oil — better than regular foaming face washes do it.

The oil “grabs” these impurities and holds on, so that you can wash them off. And it does this without stripping your skin’s natural oils, so you don’t get that tight, dry feeling or sensitive, red skin.

Instead, you get a clean, makeup-free face without having to scrub your delicate eye area or use harsh detergent-based face washes.

Oil cleansers vs. foaming face washes

One of our big beefs with mainstream skincare is that typical face washes strip the natural oils from our skin, leaving it dried-out and irritated. Most of the “oil-free” cleansers marketed for people with acne, clogged pores, or oily skin not only strip your skin of oil, but also leave your skin over-compensating for the lack of moisture by creating more oil.

Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. It helps heal, protect, and moisturize your skin so that it can function properly. A healthy balance of oil is where beautiful, clear, and glowing skin comes from.

Oil alone does not cause blemishes. But, a backup of hardened oil in your pores can indeed clog them and cause whiteheads, blackheads and acne breakouts. So using an oil-based cleanser that attracts oil like a magnet and sweeps it away is an important method of avoiding clogged pores. This method removes excess oil without stripping away your skin’s natural oils like a soapy face wash does.

We recommend you follow up any of our cleansers by exfoliating with our Vitamin C Superpowder one to three times per week. This removes dead skin cells that are built up and can lead to clogged pores.

If you’re curious about which of these cleansers may be right for you, or how to incorporate them into your routine, remember we're here for you. Don't hesitate to reach out for a quick consult!
